"fox & friends" starts right now. >> welcome, everyone. if you were joining us the first hour, thank you very much. and now we're on for the next three hours as well. 6:00 to 9:00 a.m. eastern time, big night in florida last night for mitt romney as he won in double digits over newt gingrich. 46% to 32% as many of the polls had been showing in the last couple of days. >> well, listen, the difference
3:02 am
10 days makes. it was a short time ago, we were talking about a double digit victory for newt gingrich. not much of a surprise, though, because mitt romney was ahead in at least six major polls going into voting day. let's look at the delegate count right now and also realize that you need 1,144 and we've just gotten started, kids. mitt romney has 87 and newt gingrich has 26. rick santorum 14 and ron paul 11. last night was 50, winner take all. >> and the important thing about florida and the victory for mitt romney is keep in mind florida is the most important swing state in the united states. sorry, ohio! >> yeah, ohio, you're number two but florida number one and mitt romney in command last night as he accepted the win down there in florida, he talked about the president of the united states and his leadership getting us to this point in this lousy economy. >> three years ago this week, a

newly elected president obama faced the american people and he said look, if i can't turn this economy around in three years, i'll be looking at a one term proposition and we're here to collect. >> 35 months of unemployment above 8%. and under this president, more americans have lost their jobs and more home foreclosures have occurred than urged the administration of any other president in history. the president actually said these words. he says "let's remember now how we got here." don't worry, mr. president. we remember exactly how we got here. you won the election! leadership is about taking responsibility, not making excuses. in another era of american crisis, thomas payne is reported to have said, lead, follow or get out of the way. well, mr. president, you were elected to lead. you chose to follow. and now it's time for you to get out of the way. >> so it was a very
3:04 am
electrifying speech. both mitt romney's and newt gingrich's speech attacked president obama. will both of these candidates continue to attack the president and not one another because many people believe that has been detrimental to do that. their negatives have both risen as a result. other interesting fact is this is the first time in history that the person who won the south carolina primary did not win in modern history at least florida. that's another interesting note. >> one -- and brian had a great guest on in the first hour, he made a terrific point. you know, and so much is being made today and last night about how much money that mitt romney was able to spend on negative ads and his super pac and what not. at the end of the day, he spent a lot of money in south carolina as well. he, brian's analysts felt that it really was mitt romney's performance in those two florida debates. he took the fight directly to newt gingrich and then suddenly, a lot of floridians who had thought well, newt gingrich is
3:05 am
the guy who can take it directly to barack obama if they're on the same stage, they realized wait a minute, mitt romney can do exactly the same thing and in your analysis estimation, that was one of the things that really put him over the top. >> as gretchen would verify, the analyst doesn't have the chance to make his point if i don't ask a good question. i deserve some credit for bringing out the great -- >> absolutely. for leading the witness. >> thank you. meanwhile, mitt romney is going to get something herman cain got about two months ago and that was until he dropped out of the race. that secret service protection and i guess they say it doesn't stop because he's leading. they just have evaluated it that way and are starting to give him some secret service protection. >> and the campaign requested it and he gets it later today. >> meanwhile, newt gingrich says he's going to keep going. i thought this was wrong. i thought it was tradition to call up the guy who won and say congratulations. let's move forward. mitt romney referred to making the phone call in south carolina. but newt gingrich did not do that. one reference to mitt romney but gretchen, in the big picture, i thought he nailed this speech. >> this was quintessential newt
3:06 am
and going back to the debates in florida, i think that if newt was going to go back and look at his campaign, that those -- that was the game changing point for him is not performing like he did in the south carolina debates. but he says he's moving forward because he believes he's going to get a lot of the delegates on super tuesday which is march 6th but the one problem is he's not on the ballot in some of the other states after that point in time. he says, though, it's still 46 states to go. listen to this. >> a number of folks are holding up a sign about 46 states to go. we did this in part for the elite media because, you know, the same people who said i was dead in june and july and said i was gone after iowa was seen totally quiet the night of the south carolina victory are now back saying what's he going to do? what's he going to do? i want to reassure them tonight. we are going to contest every place and we are going to win and we'll be in tampa as the

nominee in august. >> newt! newt! newt! newt! >> so 46 states to go even though he's probably only going to be able to compete in a maximum of 44. >> nevada is going to be extremely uphill. maine is going to be a caucus and colorado is, perhaps, and minnesota is, perhaps, some place where he can make some noise. >> interesting thing is that he's still ahead in the national polls. i mean, that's the one feather in his cap. at least today. i don't know after the victory in florida if that will change it. he also said last night that he's coming at this with the power of ideas that he's got a new manifesto up his sleeve for the coming days. he's a guy of many ideas. so stay tuned to exactly what that manifesto might be. >> all right. meanwhile, let's talk a little bit about the lessons learned from florida. first of all, you could absolutely say that negative ads worked. we all hate to see them, we
3:08 am
think they're bad but at the same time, they tell us a lot of what's going on with the other candidates. 92% say that the negative ads -- 92% of the ads in florida were negative and clearly they worked. >> i think that's a sad commentary on where we've come politically. 92% of the ads, 92% of the ads are negative! i don't know, folks. i know you guys are going to defend them and you're going to say it's free speech. i'd like to live in a world where it doesn't have to come down to getting that dirty. people say that's politics and you're being naive, gretchen and bla, bla, bla, bla. i find it disconcerting that 92% of the ads in florida and for that matter every other state have gone negative. >> 92% of the ads negative in florida but you got to figure there's a possibility that 100% of the ads from barack obama on the republican could be negative as well. it builds up. >> i don't agree with that. maybe. i don't know. it's a sad commentary on where
3:09 am
we've come politically. >> they feel as though you have to contrast yourself with the guy running against you and when you stay above the fray, you get slammed like newt gingrich did in iowa and like mitt romney did in south carolina. but i have a sense that rick santorum has got it right. rick santorum essentially is staying above that. the personal attacks, focusing on the president and is actually casually saying to newt gingrich why don't you step aside? that's as negative as he gets. he waits for debates to attack. >> attorney general eric holder back in the fast & furious hot seat and facing possible contempt of congress charges. republican darrell issa, the house of the oversight committee saying he's tired for waiting for holder to comply with numerous documents relating to fast & furious. issa sent holder a letter giving him until february 9th to turn over his records or he'll face contempt charges. new video of the wikileaks founder julian assange arriving at britain's supreme court this

there in florida, it's not easy to overcome that kind of a difference in cost and spending. $15 million spent in these ads, super pac ads again newt. you might remember a couple of days before that, the south carolina, newt won that. it's interesting, back then when newt won south carolina, nobody was asking mitt romney if he was drag to drop out the next day because he got beat by newt. so they go on to nevada and missouri and minnesota and all these other programs, but i will tell you that i believe the process has really made these candidates better candidates to fight off barak obama in the november election. >> gretchen: interesting to hear that 'cause some people think it has weakened them. another interesting thing to point out is that right now, newt gingrich still atop every national poll. that could change after the results in florida. so stay tuned for that. i want to get your thoughts on something he said last night. he said that he's going to be talking about the power of ideas and that would propel him to the white house.
